Franco Huaches Montalvan runs a 6.5-hectare farm lying at an elevation of 1800-1900 metres above sea level, near the village of Chirinos in Cajamarca. Franco grows Caturra and Gesha varieties and processes his coffee on the spot. The wet process at La Lucuma starts with de-pulping, followed by wet fermentation in ceramic tile-covered tanks, then washing and rinsing, and then sun-drying on solar dryers. Drying takes about 10-20 days on average depending on the weather conditions. Another interesting fact about our coffee is that this year Franco Huaches took second place in the Cup of Excellence competition with a washed Gesha lot scoring 90.68 points. Our producer would like to take advantage of his reputation gained in the competition to draw attention to local farmers' difficulties, such as the spread of leaf rust and low purchase prices.
