The Karana community comprises 377 farmers in the Kintamani region of Bali. Rooted in traditional Balinese communal culture and practising Hindu traditions, the group embodies the harmonious relationship between agriculture and the local natural heritage. The farms, located at an average elevation of 1,200 metres above sea level, cover a total of 477 hectares and cultivate local arabica varieties, namely S795 and Kartika. The smallholder farmers in the area use a variety of processing methods, including natural, honey, washed and wet-hulled techniques. Their commitment to innovation and quality is showcased by the use of controlled fermentation techniques during processing. These diverse processing methods yield distinct flavour profiles that complement the distinctive terroir of the Kintamani region. In addition to coffee, the farmers grow oranges, vegetables, and other crops, thereby increasing the biodiversity and sustainability of their farms. Sustainability lies at the heart of Karana’s approach to agriculture. The participating farmers use composting, avoid chemical spraying and plant shade trees to promote ecological balance.
