The Long Miles Coffee Project was launched in 2012 with a mission to find, process and promote Burundi’s highest-quality coffees. They run a washing station near the village of Giku, located at an altitude of 1,900-2,100 metres above sea level in the mountainous region of Kayanza Province, just fifty-four kilometres from Kibira, the only rainforest in Burundi. During the harvest period, nearly five hundred families are submitting their coffee cherries at the Ninga washing station. Smallholders typically take care of around two hundred Bourbon coffee trees, each of which produces about 1 kilo of cherries. Coffee is the most valuable crop in the area, ahead of corn and beans.
