Decaf de Caña

COLOMBIA

producers: smallholders
region: Timaná, Huila
elevation: 1400 – 2000 m.a.s.l
species and variety: arabica, Castillo, Caturra, Colombia
processing method: washed, EA-decaffeinated

Our coffee came from the ASOMUJER (Asociación de Campesinas del Sur del Huila) cooperative in the department of Huila. The group was founded in 2007 by ten women who were looking for new, alternative business opportunities to earn better conditions in return for their hard work. Today, ASOMUJER is made up of seventy-five women producers, including activists, single mothers, and those displaced by Colombia’s conflicts. The decaffeination process is carried out locally with ethyl acetate (E.A.), naturally extracted from sugar cane. In Colombia, where sugar cane is readily available, it makes excellent economic sense to use this plentiful resource to complement the coffee industry.
