Las Margaritas
COSTA RICA
A classic honey Gesha, from Emmanuel Solis’ plantation, Las Margaritas, located in Santa Maria de Dota. Emmanuel received the Gesha seeds from the 2017 Cup of Excellence winner Monge family, so out of respect, he named this Gesha lot Johel after Mathias Monge’s father.
Emmanuel Solis is a descendant of a coffee grower family with a long history, whose grandparents were already recognized producers and cooperative founders. Emmanuel started his own plantation in 2005, which he named Las Margaritas after his daughter, Margarita. Located at 2,000 metres above sea level in El Cedral de Dota, the plantation is home to such exotic arabica varietals as Villalobos, SL28 or Gesha. The property was previously grazing land for livestock and used to be considered too cold to grow coffee. Emmanuel's risky decision to plant exotic varietals turned out to be a total success and he also does his best to make the plantation and the environment live together in harmony: he avoids the use of pesticides and plants various native fruit trees for biodiversity and shading.
