The history of Ruera Estate dates back to the British colonial era. Around this time, several large plantations were established in Kiambu County, which were divided, closed down or taken over by new owners after Kenya gained independence. One such giant plantation, covering 190 hectares, is Ruera, which is located just 15 km from the town of Ruiru (and only 45 km from Nairobi). The plantation is currently owned by Coffee Management Services Ltd (CMS), an agricultural company that is responsible for processing and selling about 25% of Kenya’s crop each year. The uniqueness of our coffee lies in natural processing: this method is mainly carried out by private plantations in Kenya, and only a small percentage of the crop is processed this way, so it is not easy to get hold of such lots and to find one as outstanding as Ruera is even more of a challenge.
