The producer of our coffee, Abebe Hewiso, farms a 3.2-hectare area near the village of Bona Zuria in the Sidama region. Abebe utilises agroforestry techniques in coffee production, which he mastered through the program. The essence of agroforestry is that natural resources (trees, shrubs) and crops live in symbiosis, bringing benefits to both parties. The system aims to tap environmental, economic and social benefits, such as improving soil fertility, increasing biodiversity and promoting climate stability. Abebe grows the arabica variety catalogued under number 74110, developed by JARC (Jimma Agricultural Research Center), originates from a mother tree in the Bishari village, located in the Illubabor region of Oromia. Catalogued in 1974, this variety is a subvariety of Ethiopian Heirloom. It is known for its resistance to coffee berry disease, high yield, and fruity flavour profile.
