The Gargari washing station is located in the Gedeb district of the Yirgacheffe region, at an altitude of 1,983 metres above sea level. The station, operated by Primrose, is managed by Birhanu Geda, who works with about 3,200 nearby smallholder farmers during the harvest season. Local arabica

varieties are often referred to as “heirloom”, but the variety identified with code number 74110 is the one that is native to the area around Gargari village. The Jimma Agricultural Research Centre (JARC), founded in 1967, is one of Ethiopia’s most important agricultural research centres; it

continuously researches, categorises, and assigns code numbers to the thousands of wild-grown arabica varieties. The coffee cherries in our current lot are fermented for 12 hours after depulping, then washed and, after washing, fermented again for 48-72 hours. After the final washing, it is dried

on raised beds for 8-12 days, depending on the weather conditions.
