Small producers in the Atitlán region typically organize into cooperatives for efficiency and environmental protection. Consequently, the pollution of the famous Lake Atitlán has decreased in recent years. The high altitude and volcanic soil are ideal for growing high-quality coffee, so Lake Atitlán coffees are sweet and balanced, with a distinct character and fruity notes. Arturo Tuy is a second-generation coffee producer who grows and processes Paché, Caturra and Bourbon varieties on his 2.4-hectare farm called Visa al Lago, near the beautiful town of San Antonio Palopo. Arturo is constantly developing on the plantation and in the wet mill, he follows the environmental best practices, such as monitoring and recycling the by-products (coffee cherry husk and wastewater).
