The Miroroma washing station is operated by the Kanyenyaini Farmers Co-operative Society near Kangema town in Murang’a County, south of the foothills of Mount Kenya. More than 70% of the region’s coffee production is by smallholder farmers, who grow no more than a few hundred coffee trees on a few

hectares. Murang’a is a less popular coffee-growing region than neighbouring Nyeri and Kirinyaga counties, but it still has the potential to produce high-quality coffee. During the harvest season, around 1,000 smallholder farmers deliver their crop to the Miroroma station, where the coffee cherries

are immediately sorted and separated according to various criteria. During processing, the beans are depulped and fermented, followed by washing and drying for 9-13 days.
